Ten shot in gang-related incidents in last week; Police hard at work to solve crime spree

Posted: Monday, March 22, 2021. 9:40 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Five separate incidents in Belize City and Punta Gorda Town in the last week have resulted in ten persons being shot, four fatally.

According to Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette, the police have been hard at work not only to arrest those responsible, but also to ensure they are put away for their gang activities as well. ACP Myvette notes that “a number of persons have been arrested and charged in relation to those incidents, and further investigations are being done to try and tie those persons in relation to gang activities, other than the criminal activities for which they have been charged.”

ACP Myvette disagreed that the penalties for being a member of a gang or displaying gang insignia are not detrimental to those being arrested, as in addition to criminal charges, these offences under the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act are assessed as well.

Tyrique Gillett was struck down last Tuesday night on Elston Kerr Street and Kareem Fisher shot at. On Wednesday afternoon and night, six persons were hit: Percival Pilgrim, 24 (deceased) and Kanye King, 16, on Banak Street; Delon Harris and Roy Madrid on Iguana Street Extension, and then Cynthia Conorquie and Allan Garcia were both shot dead on Logwood Street.

In Punta Gorda, Dennis Trapp was shot dead early Thursday morning, and on Saturday, Clifford Lorenzo was the latest victim.
