By Zoila Palma: Today, the Mental Health Association issued a statement reminding those who need help that they can access it through the association.
“The recent tragic death by apparent suicide of a 17-year-old girl in Belmopan reminds us that many people who need help often do not know how to access it. This is especially true when family disfunction and domestic abuse means that home is not a safe place,” the association said.
According to the association, people who are in distress are not in the best position to seek the help they need.
Sometimes other family members, neighbours, friends, teachers, and others must be the ones to step in.
If you or someone you know might be in crisis you should contact one or more of the following:
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at nearest hospital or clinic
Mental Health Association (to channel concern to relevant parties) (202-2511)
Local family support community organization FAITH Belize in Belmopan (Contact: 634-9483)
Mind Health Connect (www.mindhealthconnect.com to find resources in your area)
Police Domestic Violence Unit (223-1080)
Trusted religious Minister or teacher (to channel concern to relevant parties)
Trusted family member, friend, or neighbor (to channel concern to relevant parties)
“If you need help or someone reaches out to you for help do not let shame or embarrassment prevent you from acting – a life depends on it,” the association reminds.
