By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize at its Cabinet meeting held on April 20, 2021, authorized the delivery of 50,000 tons of sugarcane from Orange Walk and Corozal sugarcane farmers to be milled by the Santander Sugar Group.
“With this decision, farmers will be able to generate income from sugar cane, which would have otherwise been left standing in the fields,” a statement from Government said.
A letter sent by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise to Chairman of the Belize Sugar Industry control board informed that the decision was made based on the current status of sugar milled by the Belize Sugar Industries Limited; the quantity of sugar cane remaining in the fields to be delivered; and the remaining period left in the 2020/2021 grinding season.
“BSI will not be able to efficiently mill all available harvestable from Corozal and Orange Walk sugar cane farmers,” the letter stated.
In addition, the ministry says that Government believes that this is in the national interest and the survival of the industry.
