Pan American Health Director says 1 in 4 COVID-19 deaths were in the Americas

Posted: Monday, May 3, 2021. 9:37 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, said that 1 in 4 COVID-19 deaths last week were in the Americas.

Etienne said that almost every country in Central America is reporting a rise in COVID-19 cases.

New variants of the virus are the cause of soaring cases in the region coupled with slow vaccination rollout.

In addition, PAHO reports that many health systems are struggling to cope with the rise in infections.

The worst-hit nation in the Americas is Brazil with the 2nd highest number of COVID-19 deaths following the United States.

Over 317 million vaccine doses have been administered in 49 countries in the region, Etienne reported.

Almost 7 million of those were purchases through COVAX, the vaccine distribution facility backed by the World Health Organization and the Vaccine Alliance known as GAVI.
