By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Russian health authorities today authorized the use of Sputnik Light, the single-dose version of the Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine, according to Forbes.

The Russian developers said that Sputnik Light will speed up immunization campaigns.

Forbes reports that the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which helped to finance Sputnik Light, said in a statement that the vaccine “demonstrated 79.4% efficacy” 28 days after being injected.

That is lower than the double-dose Sputnik-V which is 92% effective in combating Covid-19 but the RDIF said that is “higher than that of many two-dose vaccines.”

The statement by the RDIF said the Sputnik Light was made to speed up vaccination campaigns in large populations but the two-dose Sputnik V “remains the main vaccination tool.”

So far, the RDIF release said that 20 million people have received at least the first dose of the Sputnik vaccine which has been authorized in 60 countries.

The Sputnik Light is stronger than one single dose of the two-dose Sputnik V.

While Russia approved the Sputnik V and it is being used in 60 countries, the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency have not authorized it.
