BNTU blockades reported across the country

Posted: Monday, May 17, 2021. 8:33 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: The teachers’ strike continues today with road blockades reported across the country.

BBN has received photos of blockades in Dangriga, Belize City, Orange Walk, Corozal, and Esperanza, Cayo.

Over the weekend, the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) issued a survey to branches and they voted to continue the strike.

While the Government of Belize (GOB) has agreed to the majority of the unions’ demands, the teachers are reportedly unhappy with the decision to proceed with the 10 percent salary cut and three-year increment freeze.

The BNTU is taking the position to strike, in spite of the warning issued by GOB last week that those who continue to strike after May 15, will have their salaries docked.
