By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A number of events were rescheduled on Tuesday at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics according to Belize Head of Mission Herman Pastor Jr.
“Most if not all games will be postponed today due to a typhoon forecast to land today,” Pastor wrote from Tokyo. “We were instructed to collect all flags off balconies and all chairs, etc,” Pastor added.
In effect the weather system was not a typhoon as it wasn’t that strong. However, Tropical Storm Nepartak still forced the Olympics organizers to reschedule archery, rowing, and sailing events.
Surfing, which is debuting as an Olympic sport, was benefiting as the surfers were getting bigger waves for their final event which was brought forward by a day.
The storm which was expected to have gusts of up to 67 miles per hour was to pass to the Northeast of Tokyo and heavy rainfall was expected north of Tokyo.
“In line with the current weather forecast, the schedule for the rowing and archery events due to take place on the 27th have already been changed,” Tokyo 2020 organizers said in an official statement on Monday, July 26, Republic World reported. “At this time, there are no plans to change the schedule for any of the other events due to be held on Tuesday.”
“Unlike an earthquake, we’re able to predict the path of a typhoon so we’re able to prepare in advance,” Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya said on Japanese television.
Tokyo is 15 hours ahead of Belize.
