By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber indicted the ruling party in his Independence Day address for “misleading Belizeans in order to return to power last year.”
Those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic malaise were disappointed, Faber said, when Government essentially phased out the Unemployment Relief Program, Food Assistance Program, Food Pantry and business relief with little to no warning or explanation.
Many depended on these programs while waiting for jobs to come back, and are now forced to struggle to put food on the table while Government favorites are living high off the hog, Faber claimed.
Faber went on to point out that even the tools for fighting the pandemic – testing, treatment and so on – now come at a cost, offered by new intimates.
And there is no consultation on decisions to be made for the good of the country, Faber said; only decrees handed down at press scrums or via teleprompter by the Prime Minister.
For its part, Government has said it wants to ensure Belizeans have good jobs that will provide greater security than the transient programs offered by the last administration, many of which it charged went to their selected favorites.
