Police officer served with notice of intended prosecution following fatal traffic accident

By BBN Staff: Police have served one of their own, Assistant Superintendent Santiago Patt, with a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) following a fatal traffic accident in Dangriga yesterday which claimed the life of Karl Wayne Tillett.

ASP Patt was driving in his private vehicle accompanied by a sergeant of police in the evening when his vehicle collided with Tillett’s motorcycle. Tillett received head injuries and was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital where he later died.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department, said that Patt has since been fully cooperating with police and voluntarily gave blood and urine samples to test his alcohol concentration.

Yearwood said that the lab results of those tests will assist in determining what, if any, charges are levied against Patt.

“We are deemed to be on duty 24 hours,” Yearwood said. “But like I mentioned it was in his personal Chevy Trailblazer. As a commander in a district, we must be on duty at all times. Official duty would be a difference.”

Tillett was a volunteer Belize Defense Force soldier.
