Opposition demands resignation of Home Affairs Minister and CEO over “out of control” crime situation

Posted: Monday, October 18, 2021. 2:01 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Not for the first time nor the last, the Opposition United Democratic Party has demanded the resignation of Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa and CEO Kevin Arthurs.

Their crime, if you will: being unable to arrest the crime situation across the country and particularly in Belize City.

The pair, the UDP say in a statement, “are demonstrating no concern for the safety of our communities or any initiative in formulating and implementing solutions almost one year after taking office.”

By the UDP’s count there have been 90 murders from January to September of 2021 compared to the same time period in 2020 (with the important caveat that one short state of emergency period has been instituted this year compared to multiple lengthy periods tied to both crime and the COVID-19 pandemic). Three more were reported this past weekend including 2 in the Old Capital and more of the innocent sections of our population are now being targeted.

The UDP accuse Arthurs and Musa of “engaging in lavish trips abroad,” even as one Minister of State’s son is linked via a weapon to a weekend murder.

The Opposition also calls on the Prime Minister, as he did no more than two weeks ago, to address the nation on what will be done to solve crime. It has previously offered its assistance in this endeavor.
