By BBN Staff: A man from Rock Stone Pond, Belize District, has been fined and ordered to replace his wife’s phone after he smashed it during a moment of drunkenness, and chopped her storage barrel with a machete.

Fifty-six-year-old Calvin Gilharry pleaded guilty in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, saying that his wife would have dropped the charges, but she was a no-show in court, prompting his guilty plea.

His wife told police that he came home smelling of alcohol on the night of December 28, and asked to borrow her phone to use the flashlight so he could bury a dead chicken. She went on to say that he deliberately smashed her phone on the ground once she handed him the phone and they got into an argument over it. That’s when he took a machete and chopped up the barrel.

Gilharry was fined $400 plus $5 cost of court, and additionally ordered to compensate his wife $400 for a new phone. He was ordered to pay the fine by March 31 or face four months in prison, and if he does not pay the compensation by April 30, the court will seize valuables from him and sell them to acquire the value of the compensation.
