Police make arrest in murder of Filiberto Ramirez

By Aaron Humes: Police have formally arrested and charged two youths from the Stann Creek District in the murder of 33-year-old Filiberto Ramirez of Steadfast village, Stann Creek, earlier this week.

This evening police named Oncell Lloyd Gilbert Lopez Jr., a 20-year-old Belizean Fisherman of Steadfast Village, Stann Creek District, and a 16-year-old, Belizean Student of Dangriga Town as jointly accused of the crime of murder.

Ramirez was reported missing on Monday after last being seen by family on Saturday morning. His body was found off the roadside later on Monday, separated from his clothes and bearing chop wounds.

Police also report that the Dangriga branch of the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit (GI3) recovered a black firearm with empty magazine found in an old backpack inside an elevated wooden house located near the farm where Ramirez’s body was found.

As no one was found in the immediate area and the weapon has not been linked to Ramirez’s death, it was taken to the police station and deposited as found property.
