Sixty-three-year-old man pleads guilty to burglary of his cousin’s meat shop, spared jail time

By BBN Staff: A 63-year-old man from Belize City was spared jail time in court this week after pleading guilty to burglarizing McKenzie Meats on Mahogany Street.

Lloyd Garbutt appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday, answering to a single count of burglary.

During his guilty plea, he explained that the owner of the business was his cousin and that he lived on the premises. He told the court he was sorry for what he had done and that he would pay back the money he stole during the burglary. He also told the court that he was drunk at the time.

Considering his early plea and the fact that he had no previous convictions for the same offense, the court fined him $1,000 plus $5 cost of court, to be paid by June 20 or he will face six months in jail.

The Magistrate also informed him that the prison sentence for a conviction of burglary is between 5-7 years.

Garbutt reportedly broke into the meat shop on February 27, and stole $230 from the cash register. He was identified via the store’s security camera.
