The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Thursday helped farmers in Valley of Peace in the Cayo District solve a water management problem so they can irrigate their vegetable fields.
MAFSE said that recently the Valley of Peace Lagoon Farmers Cooperative Society had issues with their water source for irrigation of their fields. When asked to assist, MAFSE provided a tractor from the Central Farm station to help solve the issue.
“The vegetable crops that they sell at the market are irrigated with water from a lagoon; this water, in turn, is kept in a reservoir pool, and is then taken to the fields via canals,” MAFSE explained in a social media post.
“With the onset of a bit of recent dry weather the water in the pool and canal has lowered to critical levels and the co-op asked for help to get water from the lagoon to their local source.”
According to MAFSE, the tractor’s power take-off attachment is used to power the pump. The canal now has water again to irrigate the crops.
MAFSE said it stands ready to assist and collaborate with farmers with production issues, when and where it can.
Farmers are advised to get in touch with their District Agriculture Coordinators to learn more or to report issues.
