By Aaron Humes: The lead-up to Holy Week has been less than blessed, with three murders and two more dead bodies found in a span of 48 hours or less.
On Friday morning, the body of 64-year-old Yichao Li was found in the waters of Corozal Bay; his cause of death is so far unknown.
On Friday night, there was a murder in Mahogany Heights, Belize District, where Carlton Gladden was shot and killed inside his home. The mayhem spread to Belize City on Saturday night, when Mark Anthony Lord, was walking on Jones Street just after 6:30 pm when he was shot multiple times and died on the scene.
Later on Saturday night, John King, a semi-pro football player and budding musical artist, was gunned down at a residence on Victoria Street. King came under attack when he opened the door after he and a friend heard a person shout the word “Evil” a number of times.
And between Saturday night and this morning, the body of Daniel Gutierrez, reported missing last week, was found in a shallow grave in the San Martin area of Belmopan.
That makes five dead so far this weekend from possible murder and seven for the month with the additions of Tyreek August and Estevan Baeza. We’ll have the latest from the police on Monday amid hopes that Easter week will remain peaceful.
