By Benjamin Flowers: Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States Dr. Anthony Fauci says that the COVID-19 pandemic is coming to an end in the US, NBC News Reports.

Fauci has made several statements to US media over the past week, such as PBS NewsHour and the Washington Post, explaining that the US is “out of the pandemic phase,” and has entered the “control stage” of dealing with COVID-19, noting that there are now fewer cases and deaths than in the winter when cases had surged due to the Omicron Variant of the virus.

“We are now transitioning — not there yet, but transitioning — to more of an endemicity, where the level of infection is low enough that people are starting to learn how to live with the virus, still protecting themselves by vaccination, by the availability of antivirals, by testing,” Fauci said.

He noted that the elimination and eradication phases follow the control phase, but believes it unlikely that COVID-19 will ever be truly eradicated. Fauci also noted that the remainder of the world is still in the pandemic phase and that the US needs to remain mindful of that.

NBC also reported that the U.S. is recording around 51,000 Covid cases and just under 400 deaths a day on average, noting that there is a 49 percent rise in reported cases, despite undercounting due to in-home tests that may go unreported.

Globally, there are around 674,000 average COVIDcases per day, although worldwide cases have declined by 35 percent in the last two weeks, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded just over 15,000 deaths globally, reportedly the lowest since March 2020. The WHO stresses that the world is still very much in the middle of the pandemic and that the possibility of new variants of the virus makes maintaining surveillance a priority among nations.
