By Aaron Humes: Even in the midst of the pandemic, says Secretary of Tourism of Mexico Miguel Torruco Marques, the Mexican tourism industry refused to roll over.

It kept its major airports open, focused on sanitization and limiting the spread of COVID-19, and plotted a comeback.

Now it is reaping the benefits, with am estimated 42.3 million tourists set to visit Mexico this year (at Belize’s touristic height, around 1.5 million tourists, both cruise and overnight, in total came to the Jewel).

How are they doing it? That is the focus of Secretary Torruco’s meeting today with Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler, as they plan for the post-pandemic era.

It starts with what the Minister refers to as sustainable tourism development – ensuring that visitors come safely, spend generously and leave happy – as happy as those they have visited.

Among the topics up for discussion is an extension of the Tren Maya railroad system into Belize as floated by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador during his visit in May; including Belize in discussions about the hotel and transport product, and addressing snags such as the visitor card system, addressing border conditions and revitalizing links such as the ADO bus service from Belize City to Merida and Cancun.
