By Aaron Humes: By a Zoom meeting held this morning, owner and manager of PLUS TV in Belmopan Louis Wade Jr has been nominated as the independent press’ representative on the People’s Constitutional Commission (PCC).
Wade took six votes to three for Channel Seven reporter Daniel Ortiz; also nominated were senior reporter for LOVE FM/TV Hipolito Novelo and executive producer of PGTV in Punta Gorda Town George Myvette.
Ortiz, who has 15 years of experience as reporter for Amandala and then Channel 7, was voted as alternate representative by eight votes to three over Novelo, who has worked for Channel 5, CTV-3 and Love FM in a career spanning almost as long.
By suggestion of this media house, the representatives who attended today’s meeting have committed to conduct an internal and public education campaign with the support of experts in constitutional law on the genesis, scope and reformational efforts of the Constitution.
As we noted, the independent media did not exist in 1981 when the Constitution was originally written, and at the time of the last significant effort to reform it in 1999, a media representative was selected by the Government and not popularly voted on.
We will continue to keep you informed of developments and await an interview with Wade, tentatively scheduled for later today.
