By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Seventeen people lost their lives after a boat carrying Haitians capsized in Bahamian waters, Loop reports.
Rescuers were able to get to 25 people after the boat that is believed to have been involved in human smuggling capsized off the coast of New Providence on Sunday.
Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis said that the boat left the docking facility at 1 am with 60 people on board.
Authorities believe that the boat that was destined for Florida capsized in the rough seas.
Sixteen of those that died were women and 1 was a toddler, believed to be illegal Haitian immigrants living in the Bahamas.
The search continues for others who were on board.
Davis has extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
He added that those who were involved in the smuggling operation will face prosecution.
