Cayo father charged by police for third incident of child injury in seven years

Posted: Monday, August 8, 2022. 3:55 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Breaking Belize News has confirmed with police sources that a resident of Camalote, Cayo District, now identified as Troy Banner, was detained on Sunday after his newborn child was hospitalized following injuries sustained on Saturday.

We understand that the baby suffered a broken arm, mouth abrasion and bruises to the back. We understand that Banner claims that the baby fell off the bed.

But according to Belmopan area news station PLUS TV, this is the third time this person is accused of injury to a child, as he has previously faced separate, similar allegations in relation to two other children, one of which he was charged with manslaughter.

His former partner and mother of his now-seven-year-old son (they have separated) told the station that similar injuries were sustained by her son in the early months of his life in separate instances under the accused’s care, but he was released by police and never charged in her case due to lack of evidence.

Investigations continue into this incident, but she expressed interest in having police re-open her son’s case as well.
