National Hurricane Center: Tropical wave coming off Africa could develop this week

Posted: Sunday, September 11, 2022. 5:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring a tropical wave that is expected to emerge off western Africa on Monday.

According to the NHC, the wave is forecast to gradually develop through midweek as it moves west or west-northwest across the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, forecasters are giving it a 20% chance of developing over the next five days.

Data from the NHC revealed that there were 21 named systems during the 2021 hurricane season versus 30 named systems in 2020.

“Dry air, Saharan dust, and wind shear have been among the reasons there haven’t been more storms this year,” meteorologists at the NHC said.

Forecasters further noted that an average year calls for 14 named storms and the next storm to form will be named Fiona.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 each year.
