By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize fell to a 0-4 record after losing to Costa Rica in the XIX Under-21 Central American Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Alexis Argüello Polideportivo in Managua, Nicaragua.
Costa Rica won in three consecutive sets: 25-15, 29-27, 25-23).
Eleazar Mejia scored 15 points for Belize. Preston Smith contributed 11.
Dowshel McDonald recorded 15 and Johan Cerdas 10 for Costa Rica.
Though Belize was better in attack gaining 37 points to Costa Rica’ s 32, our men lost the game on errors making 37 errors to Costa Rica’s 17. Belize was also superior to Costa Rica in blocks, smashing 8 to 7. In serves, both teams were even serving 3 aces each.
Prior to today’s loss, the U-21 Belize Men’s National Team fell Guatemala 0-3 (21-25, 11-25, 25-19, 10-25) on Thursday, 0-3 (16-25, 19-25,17-25) to Panama on Thursday, and 0-3 (19-25, 12-25, 20-25) to El Salvador on Monday.
In the other games today, Panama take on El Salvador while Nicaragua close against Guatemala in what could very well be the championship game.
Going into today’s games, Guatemala led with a 3-0 record for 12 points. El Salvador were 2-1 for 10 points while Nicaragua were at 2-0 for 8 points. Panama had six from a 1-1 record, and Honduras had 1 point from a 0-3 record.
Costa Rica now have 11 points from a 2-1 record while Belize are still at one point from a 0-4 record.
After today, Belize will have two games left: against Honduras on Saturday at 2:00 pm and against Nicaragua on Monday at 6:00 pm.
The regional championship is organized under the banner of the Central American Volleyball Federations Association (AFECAVOL).
