Belize Sugar Industries agrees to Mediator, awaiting Cane Farmers next move

By Aaron Humes, Orange Walk Town: Director of Finance for Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) Shawn Chavarria offered the latest lengthy rebuttal to the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) over the delay in negotiating a new Commercial Agreement.

The latest is that Government has proposed the name of a mediator to which Chavarria says BSI has agreed. Now the ball is in BSCFA’s court to move the process forward.

Chavarria charged that BSCFA keeps moving the goalposts as to what it wants despite having access to key production and sales figures from the millers. The Association is quickly realizing, he added, that their proposal of a 60-40 gross revenue split is unworkable without the savings from logistics operations moving to Big Creek and more revenue from direct consumption sugar. If the BSCFA does not want to take on some of the costs of producing direct consumption sugar, then they cannot expect to reap from the benefits thereof; their payment would be for the raw sugar only.

Nonetheless, Chavarria says BSI/ASR is committed to the mediation process and to creating a viable commercial agreement that benefits both sides.
