Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema out of the World Cup injured

Four years ago, Karim Benzema missed the World Cup because of problems he had with the French Football Federation due to his alleged role in a sex-tape scandal involving his France teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

And now, the best player in the world according to France Football, will not be participating in the World Cup which kicks off on Sunday after injuring himself in the first training with Les Bleus, the French National Team, in Qatar. He had reportedly complained about pain in his left thigh before, according to the French Football Federation.

“Karim Benzema is out of the World Cup,” the FFF said. “After hurting the quadriceps on his left thigh the Real Madrid striker is forced to give up on taking part in the World Cup.”

Benzema’s absence is a huge blow to France’s aspirations of retaining the World Cup as they already lost Paul Pogba.

“He went for an MRI scan in a hospital (clinic) in Doha, which unfortunately confirmed a tear,” the FFF said.

Benzema will reportedly need a three-week recovery period.

“I’ve never given up in my life but tonight I have to think of the team, as I have always done,” Benzema said in a social media post. “So reason tells me to give my place to someone who can help our squad have a great World Cup. Thanks for all your messages of support.”

“I’m very sad for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective,” said French coach Didier Deschamps.
