By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, November 28, 2022, at the launch of the online labour complaints system, the Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, Oscar Requena said that Government plans to deliver on the $5 minimum wage as early as January, 2023.

“Come January 1st, we will deliver on the $5 minimum wage for Belizeans across this country,” Requena said.

“We have the situation analysis completed and we also have the report on the consultation process with stakeholders. The consultant met with various stakeholders across the country including labour organizations, employers, and employees, and certainly, their views were taken into consideration,” Requena added.

Requena added that the minimum wage must be increased due to inflation and the cost of living.

Requena says that the minimum wage increase was a commitment from this administration’s Plan Belize.
