By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, the congress of El Salvador voted to once again extend the country’s state of emergency as it continues its crackdown on gangs, the Associated Press reports.
The State of emergency is being extended for the ninth time and will go into the new year.
To date, over 60,000 people have been arrested and while human rights groups call on the Salvadoran government to respect the human rights and dignity of those detained, the measure seems to be popular among Salvadorans.
Some polls show support for the state of emergency reaching almost 90% among Salvadorans.
Gangs in the Central American nation are estimated to be about 70,000 and they control several areas and engage in violent crimes.
