By Aaron Humes: A tragic mishap on the Caves Branch River off the Hummingbird Highway on Christmas Eve claimed the life of a tour guide of Armenia, Cayo District.
39-year-old Julio Escobar and other workers at the Caves Branch Resort, under the command of senior guide Carlos Hernandez, were out on tour with guests just before midday when it was observed that the river was rising rapidly.
Police say three of the guides including Escobar went upstream to look for a safer area to cross and on finding one were testing it when suddenly a log crashed into Escobar, knocking him out of his tube.
Escobar went under the waters and failed to resurface; after a fruitless search, the others returned to inform their supervisor. Astrum Helicopters was engaged to fly low over the area and spotted his helmet, whereupon the search resumed.
The body was located around eight Saturday evening, upstream from where he went under. It was recovered and transported to the Western Regional Hospital where Escobar was pronounced dead and awaits a post-mortem examination. Investigations continue.
