International News: UNICEF says Haitian children vulnerable amidst widespread violence

Posted: Friday, January 27, 2023. 2:55 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: UNICEF’s Latin America and Caribbean director, Garry Conille says that more than 1 million children in Haiti remain out of school and a similar number are under threat of violence, Reuters report.

Last year, UNICEF noted that children in Haiti were suffering malnutrition and armed violence.

In September of 2022, many schools were unable to open due to gang violence and the humanitarian crisis.

Conille urged leaders to unite and ensure children have access to education, food and drinking water.

This year, the agency is seeking $210 million for operations in Haiti due to the ongoing crisis.

UNICEF is also seeking to address gender based violence and violence toward children in Haitian homes, where corporal punishment remains common.
