High School teacher accused of inappropriately communicating with student in Belize City being investigated

Posted: Wednesday, February 1, 2023. 8:31 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In an official statement, the Ministry of Education announced that a teacher at Canaan Seventh-Day Adventist High School, accused of inappropriately messaging a female student seeking a relationship, has been sent on administrative leave pending investigation.

The Ministry said it had been made aware of the alleged misconduct and was “disturbed and deeply concerned” by it, reiterating its commitment to keeping students safe and learning, and teachers teaching the right things in the right way.

According to the student’s “concerned parent” who has been communicating with media houses including Breaking Belize News, the messages were first sent a week ago and, inter alia, stated the teacher’s desire for a relationship with the student in the short term and when they came of age.

When nothing was done after an initial report to the school last week according to the parent, they visited the school to make a formal complaint and the student was interviewed in the presence of her parents.

But the school, according to the parent, had made no assurances that it would remove the teacher or discipline him, prompting the parent to contact the Ministry, media houses and others decrying his “predatory, pedophile” behavior and the school’s failure to act in a timely manner.

Compounding matters, according to the parent, is that the school reportedly dismissed another teacher caught seeking out one of his students; that incident was also referenced within the text conversation by the teacher currently under investigation.

The parent described their child as a “mess” and “scared” by the trauma of this event, and has not ruled out legal action, but still wants to work with the school to not only see the teacher removed and his license to teach revoked, but to set precedent as to how matters like this should be handled.
