Belize Progressive Party calls for removal of PG Town Councilor Moses Cal

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) is calling for the removal of Punta Gorda Town Councilor Moses Cal, after he was charged for abusing his spouse.

The BPP issued a statement this week, condemning Cal’s alleged actions and noting that, in the greater context of International Women’s Month, the Punta Gorda Town Council needs to quickly address the issue with Cal.

“March is dedicated to celebrating our women and the BPP finds it shameful and distasteful that an educator and Councillor from the Punta Gorda Town Council (PGTC) has made the media rounds, charged for wounding, of his partner. We call for the PGTC to take swift and corrective action against this alleged abuser,” the BPP said.

The party also called on elected officials to maintain their dignity and that of their spouses, noting that every day should be a day that women are supported and that abuse in all its forms is condemned.

Apart from condemning abuse, the BPP took a positive stance on the situation, noting that, with help, both the alleged abuser and the abused can survive the ordeal to end up in a better place.

“Furthermore, the alleged abuser needs to seek counseling along with his spouse, now a victim of abuse, but we hope she will soon be known as a survivor,” the BPP added.

Cal was charged with a single count of wounding on Monday, after allegedly punching his spouse several times in the face.
