By Aaron Humes: There were six traffic-related fatalities across the last two weekends in the north – a family of four in a head-on collision on the San Antonio Road and one each in Blue Creek, Orange Walk, and in Corozal which involved motorcycles.
According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, Police Department presence on major highways has increased as part of a “road policing” policy – stopping traffic violations and catching transient potential criminals possibly in the act.
As for motorcycle riders, he had this warning: “You are not a towhead or a bulldozer, ride on your side of the road and likewise when it comes to motor vehicle drivers, they sometimes don’t have any respect or regard [for] motorcycle riders. We must ensure that motorcycle riders are also paying road tax by way of licensing their vehicles and they do have a space on the road as well and we must respect that.”
The Commissioner also mentioned that tradition aside, parents can be at fault if a minor is found to be operating a motor vehicle, especially if an accident occurs.
