Government offices close at noon on Holy Thursday for “great Easter exodus”

By Aaron Humes: Today, Wednesday, will be the last full day of service at all Government of Belize offices countrywide as by both tradition and the order of the Executive, government offices will close at midday on Holy Thursday, April 6, through Easter Monday, April 10, for the Easter Break.

It is Belizean tradition that most establishments including banks, business offices, courts, and stores apart from supermarkets close as early as 12 noon or 1 p.m. on Holy Thursday in order to allow workers extra time off to get last-minute supplies, fire up the vehicles and head out of the City and other municipalities for home – and in some cases, the Cayes, Placencia, Hopkins and other destinations.

Bus companies have also sent out their schedules, generally reduced, for the weekend which accommodates the Cross Country Cycling Classic and other activities.

Most offices will resume regular hours on Tuesday, April 11, with schools returning on Monday, April 17.
