Police and Belize Defence Force still searching for drug plane believed to have landed in south on Easter weekend

By Aaron Humes: The drug cartels do not respect public and bank holidays, if a report that a suspected drug plane landed in southern Belize over the Easter weekend is to be believed.

The Belize Police Department and Belize Defence Force (BDF) have been checking out the report since Sunday according to Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “In terms of the information from our neighbouring countries and partners in this narco-trafficking war, they are saying that their radar detected, not [Tuesday] night, I think the night before, [a] low-flying plane in the Toledo District, in the southern part of the country, and it faded off the radar. They have a mechanism where they are saying [that] it is somewhere around the border of Belize and Guatemala, but they cannot see it. And so [on Tuesday], I know that the BDF did a flyover in the area and they were not able to detect it either, but that is not enough for us and so today we sent out our SPU [Special Patrol Unit] team. It’s a highly vegetated area, [with] very rugged terrain, but we sent out a team of SPU officers into the region where it is speculated to have landed and so we have not gotten a report back from them as yet. It is a very rough trek into the jungle, but as soon as we get that information, we can share it [with] you. But no plane as of 2:45 [Wednesday afternoon], no plane has been found.”

When reporters spoke to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams more than an hour later, he had no positive news but said authorities are not giving up yet: “We still have officers in the area on foot trying to comb as much as they can to see if we are going to come up with anything. Again, it goes to show that we are not in the habit of covering [up] nothing. We could have simply given up and said the plane did not land, but we want to be sure as to whether or not it landed in Belize so that we can give the nation an accurate briefing.”
