Former deputy taxman Reynaldo Verde deported to Belize after prison term in U.S.

Posted: Thursday, April 20, 2023. 10:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: He served 3 ½ years in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty to federal charges following a complaint by an American businessman, and tonight, the former Deputy Director General of General Sales Tax (GST), since amalgamated into the Belize Tax Service, Reynaldo Verde, has been deported back home.

Federal authorities arrested Verde in 2019 as he was on his way back home from a conference in Belgium and after two years of legal wrangling, he took a plea deal.

This afternoon he was met by family, friends and supporters including attorney Michael Peyrefitte, who escorted him to the Queen Street Police Station for his deportation briefing.

Peyrefitte said this is “standard procedure” under the Deportation Act and he is back home with family and in good health: “I was here to make sure that his rights were respected when he landed in Belize as a Belizean citizen.” He added that he was not aware of the case result in the U.S., but noted that he was “glad to be home.”

Following the charges in the U.S., Verde officially retired from the Public Service.
