Verdes, San Pedro Pirates, Port Loyola, Progresso qualify to the Premier League of Belize semifinals, champions Altitude eliminated

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes, the San Pedro Pirates, Port Loyola, and Progresso qualified to the semifinals of the Premier League of Belize.

The Green Machine led all teams with 30 points after 14 games. The Pirates totalled 26, Port Loyola made 25, and Progresso jumped in with 23.

Defending champions Altitude only earned 22 points and got eliminated along with Benque Viejo United with 21. Those were the only other two teams that had possibilities as Wagiya and Internacional-Bandits were too far behind.

Coming up on the weekend, the home and away semifinals kick off with fourth place Progresso to host number one Verdes at Orange Walk’s People’s Stadium. Third place Port Layola will challenge second place San Pedro Pirates.

Then, the following week, Verdes will be at home against Progresso, and the Pirates will do the same against Port Layola.

In the semifinals, the cumulative score decides who advances to the Final with the away goal solving a tie in goals.

In the final, the team with the highest number of points wins. In the case of a draw at the end of the two games, overtime and/or penalty kicks will be decide the championship.
