By Aaron Humes: Contrary to some reports, goalkeeper for Verdes F.C. Woodrow West was not “hiding” from police, his team claimed in a statement.
Prior to Police escorting West off the People’s Stadium pitch on Wednesday night during a game with Progresso F.C. in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) semifinals, Verdes said he was playing their match with San Pedro Pirates on Sunday night, hours after Imari Galvez, 19, went missing; had issued a statement to Police in Belmopan hours later before her body was found; and was working in San Ignacio and training with the team on Monday and Tuesday night before playing the Wednesday game.
Alibis aside, the team issued its condolences to Galvez’s family and hope that Police conduct a thorough investigation into her death, as well as condemnation of gender-based violence in all its forms.
It is not currently clear whether West remains in police custody along with other persons named in the Galvez death investigation.
