Tropical Depression forms on 1st day of 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Posted: Thursday, June 1, 2023. 7:11 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring a Tropical Depression in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico.

As of this evening, the Tropical Depression was located some 305 miles West Northwest of Fort Myers, Florida.

This system is expected to remain offshore and will be short-lived.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

Some modest intensification is forecast, and the depression could become a tropical storm tonight or tomorrow.

However, the system should begin to weaken by Friday night and degenerate into a remnant low by Saturday.
