Middle-aged man remanded to prison for stealing rusty bicycle worth $15

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 57-year-old man, Marlon Wayne Blease, was remanded to prison on Monday for allegedly stealing a rusty silver 20 inch bicycle reportedly worth $15.

The bicycle is the property of an employee of Chen S & A Store located on Central American Boulevard. The shop assistant reported to police that she had forgotten the keys to her bike chain on July 6, and left her bicycle on the bike rack for only 15 minutes before coming out back and realizing it had been stolen.

She asked her employer to review the surveillance footage and saw a man dressed in a white shirt and short black pants, unwrap the chain from the bicycle and ride off with it.

In court, Blease pleaded not guilty to the charge but the prosecutor objected to bail being granted to him because of the prevalence of theft in the country.

The prosecutor also asked the court to take into consideration the fact that Blease also has a total of three previous convictions for crimes of dishonesty having been convicted of theft, handling  stolen goods and burglary.

The prosecutor also informed that if not for being arrested and charged for another theft, Blease would not have shown up for court as he has been missing his other pending court cases.

The court agreed with the prosecutor and denied bail to Blease. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August 2, 2023.
