By Aaron Humes: The death of his alleged victim has led to a charge of aggravated assault being dropped against 31-year-old Mark Vernon after spending two months behind bars.
He had been charged with committing an aggravated assault with a firearm upon Iran Jones on May 13, 2023, 2 months and 4 days ago, during a domestic dispute. Vernon pleaded not guilty and was remanded pending a bail application, but he was not able to apply.
Jones, also known as Basco, disappeared after testifying as a witness in a case of murder against two men; his badly decomposed body was found in a shallow grave in the Biscayne area days later.
Since a dead man cannot help his case, the court prosecutor moved to withdraw charges and presented a death certificate of Jones to the Magistrate who set Vernon free.
