By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Costa Rica dispatched Guatemala in three straight sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 and practically secured the gold medals at the XIV U-19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship on Thursday at the Belize City Civic Center.

Costa Rica now lead the competition with four consecutive wins and 19 points. Belize have been the only ones to rob them of a set.

Guatemala gave them a good run in the first two sets but fell short twice before succumbing to the Costa Rican rallies in the final set. Angélica Rodríguez led the champions earning 21 points, 20 from the constant attacks. Joselyn Moraga added 11.

Dulce Trigueño led Guatemala’s efforts with 11 while Naomi Monney contributed 10.

Costa Rica ran over Guatemala’s attack 45-30 and double them in serves 10-5. Guatemala held the fort in blocks drawing even at seven apiece. Costa Rica gained 16 points from Guatemala’s errors conceding 13.

With only El Salvador (1-2) and Panama (1-3) left as rivals, the Costa Ricans (4-0), barring a catastrophe, have already ensured and insured the championship. They have already taken care of their toughest competition in beating Belize (2-1), Nicaragua (3-1) and Guatemala (2-2).

In the remaining games on Thursday, El Salvador are playing Panama in the second game at 5:00 pm before Belize and Nicaragua battle it out for second place at 7:30 pm.
