International News: Rapper Tory Lanez sentenced to 10 years in shooting of Megan Thee Stallion

By Celeste Chang: Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been jailed for ten years after being found guilty of shooting American hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the foot after the pair left a Los Angeles party in 2020, NBC News reports.

Lanez, 31, real name Daystar Peterson, pleaded not guilty to shooting Megan, 28, real name Megan Pete; however a jury convicted him of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence in December 2022 following a trial.

The convictions carry a maximum sentence of 22 years, eight months. Prosecutors asked for a 13-year sentence, citing Peterson’s “re-traumatizing” of Pete with social media posts about the trial that led his followers to target her. Pete was subjected to what prosecutors called ‘repeated and grotesque attacks’ and the trial cast a spotlight on the scrutiny Black women face when reporting abuse.

Defense lawyers argued for probation, citing his charity work in a video played in court, and that he be released from jail to a residential substance abuse program. They claimed Lanez has alcohol abuse disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress from the unexpected death of his mother when he was 11 years old. However, prosecutors said they were cynical of the claims, which were not presented at trial. They have stated they will appeal.

Meanwhile, Peterson apologized for his actions and said he took full responsibility for the 2020 shooting, stating, “If I could change it, I would but I can’t,” he said. “Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” he added. “I truly am just trying to be a better person.”

He also faces possible deportation back to Canada.
