By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  In the wake of the shocking assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, Pope Francis strongly condemned the ‘unjustifiable violence’ that has gripped Ecuador. The Pontiff expressed his deep condolences to Archbishop Alfredo Jose Espinoza Maeus of Quito and reached out in sympathy to Villavicencio’s grieving family as well as the entire nation of Ecuador.

Pope Francis urged both the citizens and political factions of Ecuador to come together in a united front for peace during these trying times.

The tragic event occurred on Wednesday when Villavicencio was fatally shot during a rally in the capital city of Quito. Reacting to the heartbreaking incident, Ecuador’s President, Guillermo Lasso, expressed his profound shock and outrage, lamenting the tragic loss of the presidential hopeful.
