Taiwan Embassy hosts orientation for 2023 Taiwan MOFA and Taiwan ICDF Scholarship Recipients

Posted: Saturday, August 12, 2023. 3:10 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Today, the orientation for the 2023 Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and Taiwan ICDF Scholarship Recipients was co-hosted by the Taiwan Embassy and Belize-Taiwan Alumni Society (BTAS).

The event was held at the Belize Best Western Biltmore Plaza.

This year marks a record-high number of Belizean awardees, a total of 66, since the Taiwan Government began offering scholarships to Belizeans in 2002.

Forty-five are TaiwanICDF Scholarship program awardees and 21 are MOFA Taiwan Scholarship program awardees.

The majority of MOFA Taiwan Scholarship recipients will study Mandarin Chinese in a language Center before their degree program.

Popular study fields for the recipients include tropical agriculture, public health, mechanical engineering, and computer science and information technology.

Attendees included Froyla Tzalam, Governor-General of Belize, Eamon Courtenay, Foreign Minister, and Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education.

Invited guests emphasized the critical role of education in Belize’s national development and thanked Taiwan for providing young Belizeans with scholarship opportunities, a testimony to the stronger-than-ever Taiwan-Belize friendship.

In addition, guests shared the view that the scholarship recipients will become good-will ambassadors of Belize while in Taiwan and return to Belize once completing their studies to contribute to the national development of Belize.

Distinguished alumni Dr. Gilroy Middleton, CEO in the Ministry of Immigration, and Alobi Young, President of Belize Taiwan Alumni Society (BTAS), shared their personal experiences after studying in Taiwan.

Representative of the Belize-Taiwan Association, Ian Oliva gave a welcome message and 2023 Taiwan Scholarship recipient representative Kacy Sosa shared her aspirations for studying in Taiwan and committed to returning as a positive driving force for Belize.

The scholarship programs provided by Taiwan helps Belizean students pursue higher education but also play a vital role in promoting people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding between Taiwan and Belize.
