Ministry of Agriculture hosts Pasture Grass Demonstration Plot Field Day in Central Farm, Cayo

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 16, 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) held a Pasture Grass Demonstration Plot Field Day at the Livestock Section, in Central Farm.

The purpose was to highlight the value of planting improved grasses in pasture paddocks, as well as the nutritional benefits associated with establishing pastures featuring these improved grasses. These improved pastures are pivotal in boosting production efficiency and promoting the overall well-being of livestock.

Seventy participants including farmers, technicians, Extension Officers, and students from the University of Belize attended.

The goal was to provide an opportunity for attendees to learn and appreciate the significance of incorporating improved grasses into pasture management practices.

This knowledge helps to enhance livestock productivity and contributes to the broader agricultural landscape.

Underlining the Ministry of Agriculture’s commitment to fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, the event featured presentations from key industry players such as Reimers Feed Mill, Agro-vet Jiron, Mid-west Steel, and the Development Finance Corporation. This partnership approach underscores the Ministry’s dedication to improving the livelihoods of farmers in Belize.

The Ministry says that the highlight of the event was a guided tour of 8 distinct pasture grass species that had been planted and cultivated for demonstration purposes.

The experience provided participants, including both farmers and students, with firsthand exposure to the benefits and characteristics of the grass varieties.

By showcasing these grasses, the Ministry aimed to reinforce its dedication to sustaining and developing the livestock sector in Belize.
