By Aaron Humes: Victoria Alvarez Rofina has been accused of stealing over 20 grand from a resort room’s safe on the island of Ambergris Caye.
The Belize City resident was read a charge of theft, for that on Wednesday, August 30, at Lina’s Point Resort, she stole $23,400 in cash, property of Jonathan Michael Ricci.
Alvarez pleaded not guilty and since there was no objection to bail being granted to her the Senior Magistrate offered her bail in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same amount.
Victoria Alvarez Rofina returns to court on November 30 in San Pedro Town. She is to avoid contact with the complainant or members of his family.
According to police, two officers picked up Alvarez while on patrol in the town center and recovered the funds. Alvarez could not give a proper account of where the money came from and eventually led to Lina’s Point Resort.
According to Canadian national Jonathan Ricci, who was staying at the resort, he found the money gone from his safe inside his room. He said he had met Alvarez at Wayo’s Beach Bar at about 8:30 pm on Wednesday. They then went to his room and he was there with her until about 10:45 pm where he dropped her off near the park on Barrier Reef Drive.
According to Ricci, at no point in time did he give Alvarez the key to his safe, nor did he give her permission to go into his room and the clothes closet to gain access to the safe.
The entire amount alleged to have been stolen was recovered.
