Burna Boy becomes first international Afrobeats artist to secure a number one album in UK

By Celeste Chang: Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has made history as the first foreign artist to land a number 1 album on the UK charts with his new release ‘I told them’.

Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, was born in Nigeria port on July 2nd, 1991. He rose to fame back in 2012 after releasing ‘Like to party’ with the lead single L.I.F.E.

He had come close to landing the number 1 spot with last year’s ‘Love, Damini,’ which ranked second in the UK album rankings.

According to news 24, “The feat marks the continued rise of the Afrobeats genre in Britain and around the world, as artists like Wizkid and Davido also enjoy mainstream success and increasingly shape segments of popular culture.”

Martin Talbot, the chief executive of the Official Charts Company, acknowledged Burna Boy for “blazing the trail” and landing a “fantastic achievement.” 

“British music fans have always been renowned for their love of new music and embracing cultures from around the world, and the explosion of interest in Afrobeats’ musical culture over the past decade has been a concrete example of this,” News24 said.

Burna Boy’s album was also hit on Apple Music. He also broke the record for the biggest African album in Apple Music history by only the first week of streams worldwide, according to a DNA Brand press statement.
