By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) condemned an escalation of violence against journalists in Haiti, Reuters report.
Haiti is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.
According to the commission, more than 12 journalists have been forced to flee their homes due to violence.
The commission cited the kidnappings of at least 7 journalists as well as armed attacks at reporters’ homes and workplaces.
“It is the duty of the State to prevent and investigate these events, punish their perpetrators and ensure adequate reparation to the victims,” the commission said.
Data shows that more than 200,000 people in Haiti have been displaced due to violence.
The United Nations Security Council has now approved sending an international armed force to help police restore order.
