Forgetful Belize Defence Force soldier loses M4 rifle; second rifle lost recently by the BDF

Posted: Monday, October 16, 2023. 9:50 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: For the second time in as many months, the Belize Defence Force has had a high-powered weapon go missing.

Early reports suggested that the weapon was lost when a patrol group was out, but today Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo Leal established to the press that a forgetful Lance Corporal is apparently to blame.

The M4 commando rifle was reported missing from the Xunantunich Observation Post in the Cayo District. The weapon was in the care of the Corporal who reportedly left his duty post early on Saturday to visit a friend’s house but was unable to determine where he left his weapon.

Colonel Leal explained that the officer did not indicate what he was going to do at the house, but it doesn’t matter because he should have sought proper relief before leaving base, as established under procedures implemented after the loss of the previous weapon.

In that case in August, an M4 rifle went missing from the camp and managed to make it all the way to Belize City where it was found abandoned in a lot on Jane Usher Boulevard.

According to Colonel Leal, someone confessed which led to the finding of the weapon in collaboration with Police. The matter is before an internal Court of Inquiry which will make recommendations to Commander Brigadier General Azariel Loria for disciplinary measures.

As for this missing M4 rifle, the BDF is asking if anyone knows or hear anything concerning this missing weapon to kindly contact the Belize Police Department or the Belize Defence Force. It has not been established whether the weapon is still in Belize and a tip leading to a search of a section of the northern border on Sunday was fruitless.
