Christian Espat attempts to clear his name: ‘I don’t know why they are accusing me of this triple murder’

By Aaron Humes: Tonight, Breaking Belize News was sent a short video by a family member of wanted man Christian Espat in which his voice is heard denying any involvement in the triple murder/mass shooting on Ambergris Caye late Sunday night.

He also accuses police of “torturing” him while having him in their custody last week, as confirmed by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams today.

Espat’s audio statement in full, slightly edited for grammar: “My name is Christian Espat. I am sending this video to the media to clear my name, because the police are accusing me of a triple murder that I did not commit. The reason I am not in the island at the moment [is because] last week Thursday, the police tortured [and] threatened me to the point that I cannot take pain. I am not running and I am not hiding from the law. I just came to the doctor to see if the police didn’t do any permanent damage to my head. I don’t know why they are accusing me of this triple murder, because I know I didn’t have [any] misunderstanding and no problem with Delmar Rodriguez. I never threatened him nor his family, worse have any drug-related conflict with him.”

The video concludes with a female voiceover describing pictures of Espat’s injuries and his medical report.

Espat and one Michael Brown were named as suspects this afternoon by police and authorities say they are reasonably certain they committed the killings.
