Mother of 4 girls charged for allegedly abandoning 3-year-old

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Iyannie Castillo, a Belize City mother of four, was charged in court today and granted bail for allegedly abandoning a 3-year-old baby girl who was found wandering the streets at night by police.

Castillo appeared in court unrepresented today and was read a single charge of abandoning an infant. She was informed by the Senior Magistrate that the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) will give directive on whether or not she is to be tried on indictment or summarily so no plea was taken from her today.

There was no objection to bail and the court offered her bail in the sum of $3,000 plus two sureties of $1,500 each, which she was able to make.

According to reports, on Monday, November 13, a police patrol heading toward Raccoon Street spotted a toddler standing alone on Iguana Street. The 3-year-old baby girl was picked up by police and taken to the police station. Social services were then contacted and an investigation was launched. Castillo’s mother later brought her in to the police station to claim the child but she was arrested and charged. Social services has now taken custody of all four children while the case is ongoing. Castillo has four girls aged 5, 4, 3 and 1.
